Telford Certificate in Agriculture

This course will extend your skills and knowledge for domestic students above the entry Level 2 qualification. It is a thorough programme which will well-equip any young farmer to succeed in the Agriculture industry. On completion of this course graduates will be able to demonstrate basic general agriculture knowledge and skills.

Structure:

The course runs from February to October (38 weeks) each year and focuses on sheep, beef and dairy farming. There are four weeks recess during this time. Students will attend course Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4pm. Students do work experience at local farms to reinforce the skills they learn. Fridays are set aside for self directed learning with your tutor being available for any assistance required.

Practical Work
NTA operates a small class size. In addition to NTA's Farm you will gain experience on local commercial farms.

Topics
You can expect to cover topics such as:

Livestock 1 - harvesting, (shearing; milking), livestock handling, livestock butchering, livestock production, work skills
Land Skills 1 - hazard management, quad bikes, tractors, water supplies, work skills
Agronomy 1 - pastures, crops, climates, soils, fertilizers, agrichemicals, work skills
Workshop Skills 1 - fencing 1, mechanics 1, farm forestry, life skills 1, welding, work skills
Livestock 2 - feeding and nutrition, health, livestock handling, work skills
Livestock 4 - livestock breeds, livestock breeding and reproduction, livestock handling, livestock butchering, work skills
Workshop Skills 2 - fencing 2, mechanics 2, life skills 2, workshop project, work skills
Land Skills 3 - working animals, pastures, environmental sustainability, sustainable energies, work skills

Projects
As part of the programme you will have an opportunity to integrate your learning and interests into various projects e.g. design and build agricultural resources and a weeds and grasses project.

Field Trips
NTA's Agriculture experience also opens your eyes to the wider agriculture industry with field trips to agricultural industries, services, research facilities and to agriculture producers from the small to the grand, from the specialised to the mass production farm.

Qualifications:

Telford Certificate in Agriculture (Level 3)

Students can achieve unit standards towards national certificates, if they successfully complete the unit standards offered within the Telford Certificate in Agriculture (Level 3)

Entry Criteria:

Applicants must have completed at least three years at secondary school and achieved National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 1) or equivalent. They must be 16 years or over on the date the programme of study commences - unless an exemption from school has been given. There must be a reasonable likelihood of success at level three, including the physical ability to manage the work without putting self and/or others at risk and an adequate level of literacy and numeracy skills. In addition, international students whose first language is not English should provide evidence of an overall IELTS band score of at leave 5.5 or equivalent. Course fee applies; therefore students may be eligible for a Student Loan and Student Allowance through Studylink.
