Strategic Purpose Statement

The purpose of the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Coaching Level 3 is to provide the equine industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to coach horses and rider combinations, both individually and in a group.

This qualification is intended for people who have some experience handling horses in the equine industry and who wish to develop coaching skills. Graduates will be qualified to contribute effectively as coaches in the Sporthorse industry, in riding schools, or within the Pony Club movement.

Graduate Profile

Graduates will be able to:

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate a series of coaching lessons for beginner riders on horses, on the flat, and over a simple jumping course.
  • Apply basic coaching skills and knowledge to teach a rider on the lunge.
  • Demonstrate basic riding skills on the flat and when jumping.

Education Pathways

Learners may pathway to further study to achieve the following qualifications: New Zealand Certificate in Equine Coaching (Level 4).

Employment Pathway

Graduates of this qualification will be capable of working under limited supervision with responsibility for work outcomes. Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to be employed as assistant coaches and will benefit from having a qualification that provides recognition of their coaching skills and a pathway to further qualifications in equine coaching.

Entry Criteria

Open entry but must have the physical capability to cope with the practical demands of the qualification. Prior to enrolment in this programme, a check will be carried out to ensure the learner is a fit and proper person to work in the equestrian coaching industry.

A Police check will be required as a condition of entry.
