Diploma in Rural Business - Agriculture

The Diploma in Rural Business has been developed by industry professionals from all aspects of farm practice to equip you for management of a modern primary sector. Diploma graduates are highly sought after for their skills and expertise. Many of our graduates are now working in key industry positions with high degrees of responsibility.

NTA has an educational partnership to deliver training with Telford - a division of Lincoln University, Canterbury.

Who is it for?

Students, 18 years and over, with an interest in being employed or self-employed in the agriculture sector and wanting to progress to a supervisory level in the agriculture industry.

Structure

You will participate in lectures, tutorials, practical workshops and work experience.

Semester 1

Topics covered include:

Course 1: Physical Property resources
Course 2: Practicum 1 - Fencing, Animal Handling, Tractors, Pastures
Course 3: Production 1 - Health, Breeding, Feeding, Production Performance
Course 4: Professional Skills 1 - Business Planning, Current Sector issues, Financial Skills, Research & Report Writing, Oral Presentations, Computing Skills

Semester 2

Topics covered include:

Course 5: Resource Management - Risk, Sustainability, Livestock Trading, Health & Safety.
Course 6: Professional Skills 2 - Current Sector Issues, Human Resources, Financial Skills, Advance Livestock Production, Presentation Skills
Course 7: Practicum 4 - Soil Analysis, Water Analysis, Effluent Issues, Harvesting, Feed Budgets, Monitoring Objectives & Action Plans, Market Analysis
Course 8: Financial Management - Budgeting & Planning, Investment & Development Strategies, Agribusiness Economics

Work experience

You will have tutor-supervised work experience to reinforce and further develop skills learnt during Certificate studies. There will be work experience throughout Semesters 1 and 2.

Qualifications

Telford Diploma in Rural Business (Level 5)

Unit Standards towards:

National Certificate in Agribusiness Management
(Agribusiness Resource Management) (Level 5)

National Certificate in Agribusiness Management
(Business Planning & Financial Management) (Level 5)

National Diploma in Agribusiness Management (Level 5)

Graduation Pathway

The qualification is designed for students who want to work in an agribusiness in a supervisory and, ultimately, managerial capacity.

Duration

One academic year - 34 weeks plus 6 weeks recess, total 40 weeks.

Entry requirements

12th Standard or 'A' Level Pass and some prior demonstrated knowledge or participation in the agricultural field. DSc Agriculture graduals are encouraged to apply. International students whose first language is not English should provide evidence of an overall IELTS (academic) band score of at least 5.5 or equivalent.

Students are encouraged to apply early as spaces are limited.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in homestay or self-contained apartments. Once in New Zealand, students may opt to live in a shared flatting situation.
