National Certificate in Equine
(Sport Horse) (Level 4)
A higher standard of riding (both flatwork and jumping) is required for this qualification. This course would ideally suit those students either wishing to be employed in the sport horse industry or who want to further their own riding and training ability. The purpose of this course is to allow students who have completed the Telford Certificate in Equine Studies to complete the additional units required to complete the National Certificate in Equine (Sport Horse) (Level 4).
Structure:
The National Certificate in Equine (Sport Horse) (Level 4) course runs from October to December each year, for eight weeks, as a follow on for the Telford Certificate in Equine Studies. Course hours are Monday to Thursday 9am until 4pm, with Fridays set aside as a self-directed learning, or work-experience, day.
Content:
The topics covered in the course are:
- Preparing a horse for show
- Clipping a horse
- Teaching horses to lunge to improve performance
- Riding in a balanced position at different gaits on the flat and over fences
- Riding with a horse accepting the bit
- Riding a show-jumping course 90cm to 1.10m in height
- Dressage at Novice level including lengthened strides, leg yielding, changes of lead through trot and so on
- Cross country jumping up to 90cm
Outcome:
On completion of this course students will graduate with the National Certificate in Equine (Sport Horse) (Level 4). Graduates will be able to demonstrate knowledge and perform skills relevant to a career in the specialised Sport Horse sector of the equine industry.
Entry Criteria:
To be eligible for the Sport Horse course at the National Trade Academy students will have completed the Telford Certificate in Equine Studies. Outside students who are already working at a satisfactory level can enrol on this course and complete the stable practice units by arrangement. Course fee applies.
