Telford Certificate in Equine Studies
(Level 3)
NTA has an educational partnership to deliver training with Telford - a division of Lincoln University, Canterbury.
This course is designed to prepare students for entry into the equine industry. As a graduate of this certificate you would be demonstrating a good understanding of horse care and stable management, as well as being able to ride a variety of horses for exercise. This course of study will also provide a sound basis from which to progress onto more specialised equine fields that you may be interested in. This qualification will establish and recognise the skills and knowledge you have so you can take the next step in your career with horses.
Structure:
The Equine Studies course runs from February to October (38 weeks) each year, based at the NTA Equestrian Training Centre. There are four weeks of recess in this time. All students are required to attend course from Monday to Friday, 8.30am until 4pm. Students do work experience on Fridays, once the first six weeks on course have been completed. Work experience may be on-site at Arion Riding Centre, or at another equine establishment.
Content:
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following:
- Paddock maintenance
- Care and use of saddlery and other equipment
- Supplementary feeding
- Stable management, including bedding and cleaning stable equipment
- Grooming and care of grooming kit
- Knowledge of farriery
- Lungeing
Students will also learn about horse health:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy of horses
- Recognise signs of good and ill health
- Understand the structure and functions of the horse's body systems
- Be able to identify, manage and deal with plants and trees potentially poisonous to horses
- Assess a horses conformation and action
- Emergency care
- Transportation of horses
Outcome:
On completion of the Telford Certificate in Equine Studies, students will understand the career and training opportunities within the equine sector and what will be expected of them in an employment situation. Successful students will graduate with the Telford Certificate in Equine Studies as well as the National Certificate in Equine 'Stable Practice' Level 3.
Entry Criteria:
Students to be 16 years and over, (international students must be 18 years or over). Students need to have experience and confidence handling and riding horses. Applicants to have sufficient academic ability (this includes English language skills for international students) and physical capability to successfully complete the course. A mature attitude, a genuine interest in equestrian pursuits and commitment to the course is expected of all students. A Driver's Licence and a vehicle are preferable, but not essential.
