Work-based Training

Develop your future with work based learning. Follow a pathway to apprenticeship. Trained and qualified people are sought after all over New Zealand. Trades offer the potential to earn a high income in a lifetime career.

Our programmes are designed to prepare trainees for employment in the industry of their choice. This is achieved in partnership with your Work Based Training Coordinator, local employers and the relevant Industry Training Organisation.

How do Students benefit . . .

  • NZQA Unit Standards towards National Certificates
  • Individual Pathway planning
  • Assistance with drivers license
  • Work experience with potential employers
  • Literacy support provided (if required)
  • Industry skills training in specialised areas such as:
    • Site Safe Certificate
    • First Aid Certificate
  • Post placement support provided

INDUSTRY OPTIONS MAY INCLUDE:





  • Plumbing, Drainlaying, Gasfitting and Roofing

    A specialised induction programme designed in partnership with Work and Income, the ITO and industry. This is employment focused training and offers:

    • Individualised training programmes
    • Flexible course length
    • Relevant unit standards
    • Strong links with Industry Employers
    • Supported work experience
    • Hands on training
    • Expected Outcome
    • Employment in the sector of your choice
    • Modern Apprenticeship (if eligible)

    Once Employed:

    • 3 months post placement support
    • Career plan designed in conjunction with employee and employer

  • Flooring

    • On the job training leading to a Modern Apprenticeship
    • Specialise in carpet/vinyl laying, floor sanding or retail sales
    • ITO mentor support person
    • Successful completion will result in employment

  • All other Industry options are available

    • Established network of Employers
    • Excellent training facilities
    • Access to specialised tutoring in the following areas:  Equine, Agriculture and Pest Control
    • Strong links with Industry Training Organisations

NOTE:  'Straight to Work' eligibility is broader than Youth Training and Training Opportunities. To discuss your eligibility for these programmes, contact the National Trade Academy.
