New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture Pastoral Livestock Production Level 3 (Full-time and Part-time)

Strategic Purpose Statement

The purpose of this certificate is to provide the pastoral farming sector with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to assist in managing the factors which influence the quality of pastoral livestock production. Graduates will be cable of working under limited supervision in the pastoral livestock farming sector. Graduates of this qualification may be employed in a range of roles in pastoral farming enterprises requiring limited supervision.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Assist with the management of feed supply and demand to meet livestock production targets.
  • Identify weeds commonly found in a specified primary sector.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the establishment and maintenance of pasture in a pastoral livestock workplace.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the effect of weather on pasture supply and demand.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the management of feed surpluses and deficits.

Graduates will be capable of building on their basic skills and knowledge in the area of agriculture that they are either employed in or seeking employment in.

Education Pathways

This qualification may lead onto the New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Level 4) with strands in Arable Farming, Dairy Farming and Livestock Farming or other industry qualifications.

Employment Pathway

Graduates of this qualification are likely to be employed at a junior level within the livestock sector as farm assistants or shepherds. They may be employed full-time in a production role or perform the work as part of a wider on-farm role.

Entry Criteria

Open entry with an interest in agriculture, and must have the physical capability to cope with the practical demands of the qualification.
