Strategic Purpose Statement

This is an introductory certificate targeted at new or potential entrants into horticulture industry including seasonal workers, career changers and those not yet engaged in education, employment or training.   The aim of the qualification is to provide a sound basis for further education and training.  People who have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Horticulture) (Level 2) will be able to demonstrate fundamental knowledge and/or elementary skills relevant to various sectors of the horticultural industry.

Graduate Profile

A graduate of the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Horticulture) (Level 2) will be able to demonstrate fundamental knowledge and/or elementary skills relevant to various sectors of the horticultural industry and have a sound basis of knowledge and skills for further education and training. 

Graduates will be able to carry out practical tasks associated with an entry level role in the horticulture industry and use safe work practices in a horticulture industry workplace.

Education Pathways

Learners may pathway to further study to achieve the following qualification

  • New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General) (Level 3) 
  • New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) with strands in Amenity, Arboriculture, cemetery, fruit production, Indoor crop production, Outdoor vegetable production, Landscape construction, Nursery production, Post-harvest, sports turf 
  • New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Production (Level 4) 

Employment Pathway

The qualification is designed for individuals who wish to enter the workforce in any of the various horticultural sectors, e.g. trainee arborist, working on an organic crop/fruit/vegetable growing farm, working at a nursery or garden centre.

Entry Criteria

Domestic Students:

Age: must be at least 16 years old or 15 years of age with a Ministry of Education early leaver exemption.

Academic: open entry

Physical: must have the physical capability to cope with the practical demands of the programme – able to work with tools, wheelbarrows, lifting, and similar.

International Students:

Students must have a background or interest in Horticulture in their own country

International students for whom English is a second language must attain an IELTS General or Academic score of 5 or equivalent with no band score lower than 5 or pass an internal test to assess their English proficiency level according to rule 18 English language requirements for international students.

Distance students:

Distance learners will either be employed in the horticulture industry or have an interest in horticulture and have access to suitable facilities to complete the practical learning and the work experience. Distance learners will have full access to the horticulture facilities at NTA if they do not have other access to suitable facilities.
